House GOP Vote to Drastically Cut Pete Buttigieg’s Salary

In a striking development within the corridors of Congress, a new proposal seeking to dramatically reduce the annual compensation of the Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, to a nominal sum of $1 has made its way through the House. The initiative, spearheaded by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, is poised to be incorporated into the fiscal appropriations bill for Transportation and Housing and Urban Development for the year 2024. The proposal harnesses the Holman Rule, a seldom-invoked legislative mechanism that grants Congress the authority to adjust the income of individual government employees.

Representative Greene proudly proclaimed the successful passage of her amendment in the House on the social media platform X, expressing her belief that Secretary Buttigieg’s actions merit such a response. She criticized him for what she perceives as deceptive behavior, such as orchestrating photo opportunities of cycling to work and using government funds for private flights to receive accolades related to LGBTQ issues. Greene’s move underscores her stance that taxpayers should not bear the financial burden for what she describes as Buttigieg’s extravagant travel or his official remuneration.

This legislative maneuver comes in the wake of allegations from Republican circles concerning a video from 2021 that suggested Secretary Buttigieg’s commute by bicycle was a contrived affair, a claim that both the Department of Transportation and Buttigieg have refuted. Additionally, Greene has censured Buttigieg’s management of a train derailment in Ohio, arguing that his reaction was tardy and lacked transparency.

Secretary Buttigieg, who made a belated visit to the Ohio site and expressed regret for not responding more promptly, has been at the center of the debate. He acknowledged that he could have been more forthright about his sentiments regarding the incident’s impact on the local community.

Buttigieg’s travel choices have also been scrutinized. He was honored by one of Quebec’s prominent LGBT organizations in September 2022 for his significant contributions to the LGBTQ rights movement. This award ceremony is noted as an occasion where he utilized private jets funded by the government, a point of contention highlighted by Greene.

In defense of the Secretary’s travel arrangements, a spokesperson from the Department of Transportation emphasized to Fox News Digital that Secretary Buttigieg predominantly opts for commercial airlines, in line with a policy of efficient and economical use of public funds. Out of numerous flights taken for official business, the vast majority were on commercial aircraft, the spokesperson stated. The occasional use of a smaller FAA plane, they explained, is strategically chosen to enhance efficiency and yield cost savings for the government.

The proposal to cut Secretary Buttigieg’s salary is indicative of the heightened scrutiny and political tensions surrounding the expenditure of taxpayer money and the actions of public officials. It encapsulates a broader debate about accountability, the use of public resources, and the intricate balance of optics and practicality in government operations.
