Federal immigration authorities have taken into custody an Iranian national in Virginia who has prior convictions for rape and sodomy, according to officials.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that the individual was apprehended as part of routine enforcement efforts tied to an existing order of removal. Authorities stated that the man’s criminal history includes serious sex-related offenses and that he is now being held pending immigration proceedings.
The arrest occurred shortly after Virginia Democratic lawmakers advanced measures limiting certain forms of cooperation between state or local law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities. Those policy changes restrict participation in some federal immigration agreements.
Critics of the new state policies argue that reduced cooperation could complicate efforts to identify and remove non-citizens with criminal records. Supporters of the legislation say the changes are intended to strengthen community trust and clarify the role of local law enforcement.
ICE officials emphasized that the arrest reflects ongoing federal enforcement operations regardless of state-level policy adjustments. The individual remains in federal custody as immigration authorities proceed with the case.
