Federal officials say a chaotic scene in Minneapolis allowed a suspect to escape custody and resulted in a serious injury to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a large enforcement operation.
According to federal statements, immigration agents and Border Patrol officers were conducting a targeted arrest in the city as part of a broader enforcement effort when a hostile crowd intervened, pushing officers to abandon the operation. Authorities say that during the unrest, a protester bit off part of an ICE agent’s finger, leaving the officer permanently maimed.
Officials further reported that the suspect at the center of the operation fled amid the disturbance and remains at large. The individual was identified by federal authorities as someone with a criminal history, including prior convictions for assault and other offenses.
The unrest followed the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a Minneapolis man, by federal agents during the same enforcement action, an incident that has drawn intense public scrutiny and protests. Federal leaders have blamed the disruption on aggressive actions by demonstrators, while critics argue that the response and crowd dynamics are complex and contested.
The situation has heightened tensions between federal authorities and local leaders, with ongoing protests and calls for accountability from various community groups. Investigations are continuing into both the shooting that triggered the unrest and the maiming of the ICE agent during the subsequent crowd confrontation.
