IDF Discovers Hamas’ Base Under Shifa Hospital

Israeli military officials have levelled serious allegations against Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and in control of the Gaza Strip. They assert that Hamas has strategically positioned its operations within and beneath the premises of Shifa Hospital, located in Gaza City.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), claimed that Hamas has established multiple subterranean facilities beneath Gaza’s largest medical institution. These facilities purportedly serve as command centers for orchestrating attacks on Israeli territory. Shifa Hospital is a significant healthcare facility, boasting a capacity of 1,500 beds and employing over 4,000 staff members.
“Hamas is exploiting Shifa Hospital as a defensive cover for its militant network,” Hagari stated emphatically. “They conduct warfare from within medical establishments, thereby putting at risk not just Israeli civilians, but also the innocent residents of Gaza.”
Hagari further accused Hamas of diverting hospital resources, specifically fuel, for its military endeavors, even amidst escalating humanitarian challenges within the Gaza Strip. The IDF has released satellite images purportedly revealing various sections of the hospital and the alleged locations of Hamas’s underground networks. These images are said to depict how the hospital serves as a facade for hiding command centers and access points to Hamas’s tunnel infrastructure.
Hagari disclosed that Israel possesses “irrefutable proof” demonstrating that “countless militants sought refuge within the hospital premises” following the Oct. 7 incident. On this day, Hamas militants reportedly infiltrated the border, leading to the tragic demise of approximately 1,400 individuals in southern Israel, the majority of whom were non-combatants, including women and children.
Hamas has constructed an extensive labyrinth of tunnels beneath densely populated regions in Gaza, aiming to maneuver freely, avoid Israeli airstrikes, and conceal their weaponry. This strategy also increases the likelihood of civilian casualties during Israeli military operations, intensifying global condemnation and concern.
Izzat al Rishq, a prominent figure within Hamas’s political bureau, vehemently denied the Israeli military’s accusations in a statement to the Times of Israel, asserting, “The enemy army’s spokesperson’s statements are completely devoid of truth.” Rishq further accused the IDF of concocting these claims with the ulterior motive of “setting the stage for yet another brutal assault on our people.”
Israel has consistently maintained that Hamas utilizes Palestinian civilians as human shields, a tactic aimed at self-preservation. Following the Friday briefing, the IDF disclosed that its ground forces were “escalating their operations as of this evening.” The implications of this statement remain uncertain, as it is unclear whether this marks the commencement of a comprehensive military incursion into the Gaza Strip.
