A Mexican national living illegally in Illinois was re-arrested by federal immigration agents after being accused of decapitating a missing woman and hiding her body in a bleach-filled storage container.
Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, 52, was taken into custody by ICE agents Saturday at a Chicago market, weeks after he was initially released by a Lake County judge despite being charged in connection with the disturbing death of 37-year-old Megan Bos.
Bos had been reported missing in early March, but authorities believe she disappeared in February. Her decapitated body was discovered in April inside a sealed container on Mendoza-Gonzalez’s property in Waukegan. Investigators say the container had been filled with bleach in an apparent attempt to conceal the remains.
Federal officials allege that Mendoza-Gonzalez kept the body in his basement for two days before moving it outside. Rather than contact emergency services, he allegedly broke Bos’ phone and left her corpse hidden in a trash container for nearly two months.
Following his first court appearance on charges including concealing a death, abusing a corpse, and obstruction of justice, Mendoza-Gonzalez was released under the SAFE-T Act. The decision sparked widespread outrage among local leaders and community members who warned of the dangers of releasing non-citizens facing serious allegations.
Critics argue that Mendoza-Gonzalez posed a flight risk and should have remained in custody. Federal officials now hold him in ICE detention as the criminal investigation continues. The case has reignited debate over Illinois’ criminal justice reforms and immigration enforcement policies.
