A 39-year-old woman from El Salvador was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers during a coordinated operation at Salt Lake City International Airport, officials confirmed Tuesday. The arrest was part of a targeted enforcement initiative focused on individuals with outstanding deportation orders or prior immigration violations.

According to ICE’s field office, the woman had been living in the U.S. illegally for several years and was identified through biometric data collected during a previous border encounter. Agents located her at the airport’s baggage claim area after tracking her domestic travel itinerary from California.

Witnesses described the scene as calm but tense, with several plainclothes officers surrounding the suspect before escorting her to an unmarked vehicle. Officials said the woman did not resist arrest and is now being held at a federal detention facility pending deportation proceedings.

ICE later released a statement affirming that the operation complied with federal guidelines, noting that enforcement actions are “prioritized based on criminal history, public safety concerns, and prior removal orders.”

The arrest has sparked renewed debate in Utah over immigration policy and local cooperation with federal authorities. Immigration advocates criticized the high-visibility airport operation as “intimidating and unnecessary,” while supporters argued that strict enforcement is vital for national security and border integrity.

City officials confirmed that local law enforcement was not directly involved but had been notified of the operation in advance. The case remains under federal review as immigration courts prepare to determine the woman’s eligibility for removal or possible appeal.
