A recent leak of an internal dissent memo from the State Department has led to serious allegations against President Biden, accusing him of disseminating false information about the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The memo, which gained public attention through a leak reported by Axios, was signed by numerous State Department and USAID employees. It harshly criticizes Biden for his unwavering support of Israel, suggesting this stance indirectly contributes to what the memo describes as acts of genocide by Israel.
The memo reportedly aligns with the sentiments of progressive activists in the United States, who have expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s approach to the Israel-Hamas conflict. This sentiment, according to the Axios report, poses a fresh challenge for Biden’s potential 2024 campaign. However, the memo reportedly lacks specific examples of the misinformation it claims Biden has propagated.
The memo also touches on the tragic events of October 7, when Hamas reportedly abducted numerous civilians, including children and the elderly. It urges the U.S. government to advocate for the release of these hostages and includes a reference to Palestinians reportedly detained in Israel.
Primarily, the memo condemns the counterattacks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Hamas in Gaza following the Hamas attack that resulted in 1,400 casualties. While President Biden has supported Israel’s response, showing concern for humanitarian issues in Gaza, the memo suggests that Biden should question Israel’s actions more critically. It accuses Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, citing actions like cutting off electricity, limiting aid, and conducting attacks that have displaced many Palestinians.
The White House, at the time of the report, had not responded to these allegations.
Addressing the memo, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of internal dissent as a strength of the department, highlighting the diversity of views and the encouragement of feedback on policies, including those related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Axios reporter Hans Nichols also mentioned that the memo criticized Biden for questioning the number of deaths in Gaza, while pointing out the unreliability of statistics from the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
The memo reportedly includes broader critiques of U.S. policy in the Middle East, particularly the failure to promote a viable two-state solution, which President Biden supports. It also highlights the fact that such dissent memos are typically confidential but sometimes get leaked to the media.
The State Department, responding to Axios, expressed pride in having established procedures allowing employees to voice policy disagreements directly to senior leaders without fear of retribution.
As of the report, there were up to 239 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, including 10 Americans. The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry reported over 11,000 Gazan deaths in the fighting, without distinguishing between Palestinian civilians and Hamas terrorists.
