Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old former U.S. Marine and Iraq War veteran, has been named as the gunman behind Sunday’s deadly attack on a Latter-day Saints church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.
Authorities say Sanford rammed his pickup truck—adorned with American flags—into the church during a service, then opened fire on congregants before setting the building ablaze. At least four people were killed and eight others wounded in the assault.
Responding officers confronted Sanford and shot him dead at the scene. Investigators found improvised explosive devices at the church and consider the case an act of targeted violence. No clear motive has been determined, and federal agencies are assisting in the ongoing inquiry.
