In an unprecedented display of military force, Israel executed a comprehensive assault on northern Gaza on Friday night, having spent the prior two weeks urging civilians to vacate the area. The Israeli government’s clear and determined objective is the complete dismantlement of Hamas, the Palestinian organization that Israel categorizes as a terrorist group, responsible for claiming the lives of over 1,400 Israelis, injuring upwards of 5,200 individuals, and abducting over 200 people.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have reported that their operation targeted 150 subterranean facilities integral to Hamas’s extensive network of concealed tunnels. These tunnels serve a multitude of purposes for the group, including serving as meeting points, a means to move covertly across Gaza, and storage for arms, ammunition, and various military supplies. The use of secure landlines by the terrorists for communication enabled them to orchestrate the attacks on October 7, all while remaining undetected by Israeli intelligence.
A statement from the IDF outlined the operation’s accomplishments, stating, “We have successfully neutralized combat tunnels, subterranean combat chambers, and a range of other underground terrorist facilities.” The IDF also confirmed the elimination of members of Hamas during the operation.
The Israeli forces emphasized the strategic impact of the strikes, highlighting the neutralization of a key figure responsible for overseeing Hamas’s aerial capabilities. “Our fighter jets targeted and struck down Asem Abu Rakaba, the chief of Hamas’s Aerial Array,” announced the IDF. “This decisive action was carried out overnight.” They detailed Abu Rakaba’s significant role within the organization, overseeing unmanned aerial vehicles, drones, paragliders, and the group’s aerial defensive measures. He was identified as a mastermind behind the October 7 attacks, directing terrorists on paragliders into Israel and managing drone attacks on IDF positions.
A senior IDF general leading the operation declared, “We have deployed firepower in Gaza of an unprecedented magnitude.” He assured that the IDF is committed to eliminating both high-ranking and lower-level members of Hamas, along with any affiliated infrastructure. Lt. Col. Gilad Keinan added, “Tonight, our fighter jets, numbering around a hundred, obliterated numerous Hamas targets and deployed a significant arsenal.” He confirmed that the IDF Air Force is fully prepared for the next phases of the campaign, working in tandem with other military branches to achieve the overarching goal of completely dismantling Hamas’s capabilities and influence.
The IDF also targeted a facility linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon as a retaliatory measure to missiles launched by Hezbollah at Israel. This reflects Israel’s broader strategy to counteract threats and dismantle terrorist networks in the region.
