During a recent interview, former FBI Director James Comey expressed his belief that Russia is actively supporting Donald Trump’s potential re-election in the upcoming 2024 presidential race.
Comey, known for his criticism of Trump, participated in a discussion on MSNBC. When asked by Jen Psaki, former White House press secretary under President Biden, about his preferred candidate for 2024, Comey firmly stated, “It has to be Joe Biden.”
He expressed his satisfaction with Biden’s willingness to serve and emphasized the importance of having a leader committed to upholding the rule of law and the values of the nation. Comey stressed that beyond policy differences, fundamental principles that respect the Constitution and promote lawfulness should be the cornerstone of any president’s tenure, and in his view, Joe Biden epitomizes those qualities.
Psaki also raised the question of whether Comey, a lifelong Republican who voted for Biden in 2020, would consider any Republican candidates in the upcoming election. While several individuals, including former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, had already announced their candidacy, the recent official entries of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott were mentioned.
Drawing from his experiences, Comey, who was fired by Trump in 2017 during the investigation into potential collusion with Russia, warned that a second term for Trump would lead to a “retribution presidency” characterized by the prosecution of perceived adversaries. He expressed concerns about being on an “enemies list” and highlighted the significant power wielded by the president over the Department of Justice and federal law enforcement agencies.
Regarding Russia’s potential interference in the 2024 election, Psaki inquired about Comey’s expectations. Comey responded affirmatively, explaining that he believed Russia would act in its own national interests and seek to disrupt the electoral process. He noted Trump’s favorability towards Russian President Vladimir Putin and expressed hope that intelligence agencies were better prepared to respond to such interference compared to the 2016 election.
Comey concluded by urging the American people to recognize the dangers they face and emphasized the importance of not postponing their participation in the upcoming election.
