Nakia Thompson, the grandniece of New York Attorney General Letitia James, publicly responded to renewed scrutiny of her criminal past and fugitive status in a Facebook post, dismissing reports as “old as hell” and “fabricated.”
Thompson, 36, has a record that includes arrests for assaulting officers and a 2019 felony larceny charge. In her post, she claimed her previous legal issues were long in the past and emphasized her current status as a devoted mother, full-time worker, and college student pursuing a degree in sociology with a minor in criminal justice.
Despite her assertions, Thompson is still classified as an “absconder” by North Carolina authorities, owing to a failure to comply with probation tied to misdemeanor convictions. Her case is labeled non-extraditable, meaning state officials cannot compel her return from other jurisdictions.
Her living arrangements have drawn legal attention as well. Thompson has reportedly lived rent-free in one of James’s Norfolk, Virginia properties since 2020. The larger legal case centers on whether James falsely declared the home as a “second residence” on mortgage documents, while effectively allowing Thompson to occupy it without financial contribution—an allegation that could affect the fraud charges against James.
In her post, Thompson denied paying rent but did not address all discrepancies identified in prosecution filings. James has repeatedly rejected wrongdoing and claimed political motivations behind the accusations.
