Just before the Republican Party took control of the House, on January 6, the former House Select Committee allegedly erased over 100 encrypted files related to its inquiry. This is a significant development within the U.S. House of Representatives. This information has surfaced over the course of an investigation conducted by the Oversight Subcommittee of the House Administration Committee, which is chaired by Representative Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga.
The Oversight Subcommittee’s inquiry centers on the previous select committee’s deeds and the security lapses on January 6, 2021. With extra backing from House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who has raised funding for the panel’s work, the probe has now moved into a new phase.
Sources close to the investigation claim that after Republicans took control of the House after the 2022 midterm elections, the former select committee, chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., was required by House rules to turn over all of the records from its investigation to the new group headed by the GOP. Nevertheless, anomalies in the data transit have been detected. According to reports, the new committee only received roughly two terabytes of stored data, despite Thompson having specified the transfer of four terabytes.
Loudermilk’s committee recruited a digital forensics firm, who after a comprehensive investigation found that 117 files had been encrypted and erased. Just a few days prior to the transfer deadline, on January 1, 2023, these files were purportedly deleted. Since then, the forensics team has been able to recover all 117 encrypted and deleted data.
Loudermilk wrote to Thompson asking access to the retrieved digital files and associated passwords in response to these findings. In his letter, Loudermilk draws attention to inconsistencies in the archiving procedure and requests passwords for all materials created by the Select Committee that are password-protected.
Loudermilk has also contacted the general counsel of the Department of Homeland Security and the White House, requesting transcripts of testimony given to the previous select committee that are unaltered and undeleted. The request is in response to allegations that some important transcripts and recordings were not kept up to date in accordance with by House regulations.
The goal of Loudermilk’s work is to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the occurrences on January 6, 2021. He pledged to use every resource at his disposal to locate these documents and reveal the truth. This revelation raises concerns regarding the handling and preservation of important information linked to the Capitol riot of January 6 and signals a fundamental shift in the political narrative that has been developing around the incident.
