Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reveals in her upcoming memoir that she became the target of an internal campaign to remove her from her position—allegedly spearheaded by senior adviser Anita Dunn. Jean-Pierre claims the conflict began in October 2023 after she challenged Dunn’s instructions not to accompany President Biden on a key overseas trip.
In the book, Jean-Pierre describes Dunn as admonishing her with remarks about her gender and motherhood, saying, “You’re a woman … you’re a mother,” when dismissing her travel request. Jean-Pierre asserts the confrontation was emblematic of deeper tensions over diversity and power within the administration.
Despite publicly denying the effort at the time, Jean-Pierre writes that collusion between aides and media outlets aimed to undermine her credibility and manage her departure quietly. Dunn and other senior officials have declined to comment on the specific accusations, while several former staffers defend Dunn’s record and attribute the shift in tone to performance concerns rather than personal bias.
Jean-Pierre’s memoir, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, also chronicles her decision to leave the Democratic Party, citing erosion of trust after witnessing what she describes as “women undermining women” in senior ranks. The book is set for publication later this month.
