Ohio Republican and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has announced his support for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Jordan said that former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who are both widely anticipated to run for president in 2020, are “great guys,” but that Trump has his complete support going into the GOP primary. The statements from the House Republican come only two weeks after Trump was charged with 34 felonies for allegedly paying hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels, and as the GOP race heats up.
“I was just on the phone with Vice President Mike Pence. To the good… The governor, Mr. DeSantis, is a wonderful human being. The Freedom Caucus initially consisted of nine persons. Counted in the group of nine. Jordan declared, “I am fully behind President Trump.”
Jordan has stated that he supports Trump because of his track record of keeping campaign pledges while in office.
“No one has shown that they will do what they say and get things done like he did, and he did it when everyone in that town was against him,” he said. That’s why I’m still on board with President Trump and have a lot of faith in him.
As Trump faces criminal charges in Manhattan, Jordan has remained steadfast in her support of the ex-president. Something that has never happened before in Jordan is an inquiry into an investigation of a former president. Mark Pomerantz, a former assistant district attorney in New York County who investigated potential criminal charges against Trump, was served a subpoena by the committee’s chair last week. After learning that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had issues about the case he had inherited from his predecessor, Pomerantz and another prosecutor leading the Trump probe abruptly resigned in February of last year.
Following Pomerantz’s public comments on the probe, Jordan claims that it “strongly suggests that Bragg’s prosecution of President Trump is based on politics.”
Bragg sued Jordan last week to prevent more congressional subpoenas in connection with the Manhattan district attorney’s probe of Trump. Specifically, he charged Jordan with “obstruction and interference.”
Jordan is the latest Republican to publicly endorse Trump for the party’s candidacy for president in 2024, and he consistently leads surveys for the GOP nomination by more than 10 percent. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Representative Jim Banks (R-IN), Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) are among the at least 40 House members who have endorsed Trump for 2024.
There are three other Republicans who have also declared their candidacies against Trump. Former governors of both South Carolina and Arkansas, Nikki Haley and Asa Hutchinson, as well as software entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, have all declared their candidacies for president. The likes of DeSantis, Pence, and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) are widely expected to enter the race in the near future.
