During a speech that the Vice President of the United States gave to the Congressional Black Caucus, he made a blunder by inadvertently referring to LL Cool J as “LL Jay Cool J,” but he quickly rectified himself. LL Cool J and MC Lyte were being honored for their achievements to the music industry with the Phoenix Award at the annual awards ceremony that was being held in Washington, D.C. Biden was giving a speech at the event.
The crowd began laughing in response to Biden’s embarrassing slip of the tongue. After that, he proceeded by adding, “By the way, that boy—that man’s got biceps bigger than my thighs,” but then he swiftly moved on to address MC Lyte.
RNC Research caught wind of the error almost immediately and posted a video footage of the incident on several social media platforms. Some of the comments left on the post poked fun at Biden for the gaffe, while others took it seriously and scolded him for it.
This is not the first time that Vice President Biden has been criticized for the way he chose to phrase something. The word “boy,” which is considered a racist slur when used to refer to black males, was previously leveled as one of the criticisms leveled against him for his usage of the phrase “boy” to designate African American folks. In the beginning of this year, Biden used the word while referring to Wes Moore, who was Maryland’s first black governor, and he received criticism for doing so.
It is important to note that Vice President Joe Biden has in the past used the term “boy” to refer to younger politicians. One example of this is when he was running for the Democratic presidential nomination and he cited his ability to work with segregationist senators. This prompted some of his opponents to criticize him.
