A federal court has issued a ruling that holds former President Donald Trump accountable for allegations that he made defamatory statements about the novelist E. Jean Carroll. The court’s finding makes Trump liable for the remarks. Carroll filed a complaint for defamation against Trump in 2019, stating that Trump had sexually abused her in the middle of the 1990s. The case was filed in 2019. In addition to this, she said that he had lied about what had happened. In line with the ruling of the court, the issue of how to properly calculate the amount of damages will be the subject of a separate and distinct proceeding, which is set to take place in January of 2024.
The verdict of the court was the conclusion of an earlier legal battle, in which a federal jury in New York found Trump guilty of alleged assault against Carroll and defaming her by rejecting her allegations. The finding of the court was the consequence of this previous legal battle. That judgment will serve as the basis for the judge’s decision. A judge issued an injunction compelling Trump to make restitution to the tune of $5 million in that specific case.
Carroll filed the complaint in November 2020, taking advantage of a one-time opportunity afforded to her by a new rule that, for a period of only one year, permitted adult survivors of sexual assault to seek civil damages for sexual violence even if the statute of limitations for such claims had passed. The new rule allowed adult survivors of sexual assault to seek civil damages for sexual violence even if the statute of limitations for such claims had passed.
In June, the legal team representing Carroll said in a counterclaim that Trump’s legal team had disregarded the verdict of the jury, which stated that Trump did not rape Carroll. This assertion was made by Trump’s legal team in their filing. Nevertheless, at the end of the previous month, Judge Kaplan dismissed the counterclaim as being without merit.
The next trial, which will take place after this judgement is handed out, will be focused exclusively on determining how much Carroll is entitled to get in terms of compensation from Trump for their previous dispute. Trump has criticized the legal procedures, referring to them as a “miscarriage of justice” and a “total scam.” He has also called them “a total con.” Following the completion of the appeal process, his legal team is confident that the verdict will be overturned.
In addition to the legal action, Trump is facing many charges at the state and federal levels of jurisdiction. He firmly denies any and all of the accusations that have been leveled against him, and he refers to the inquiries as a “witch hunt.” Trump is also conducting a vigorous campaign for reelection to the president in the election that will take place in the year 2024. This election will take place eight years from now.
