In an unexpected turn of events, a federal judge in Florida has put a temporary halt on the state’s ban prohibiting minors from attending captivating drag events.

This prohibition was met with a powerful lawsuit filed by Hamburger Mary’s, an enchanting restaurant chain known for its vibrant drag performances. The Orlando branch of Hamburger Mary’s proudly shared the judge’s decision on its social media platforms, spreading the news far and wide.

Expressing their elation, the restaurant released a statement on social media declaring, “We rejoice as the judge recognizes this law as nothing short of an infringement on our cherished First Amendment Rights.” They went on to encourage everyone to read the court’s full injunction, urging them to delve into every page to gain a comprehensive understanding of the case, free from the influences of politics and fear.

The court ruling, while acknowledging that some individuals might raise objections, emphasized that a drag performer engaging in the innocent act of reading a children’s book to a minor does not amount to an obscene performance. Additionally, the existing obscenity laws in Florida already provide ample authority to safeguard children from any constitutionally unprotected displays of obscenity or impropriety.

Governor Ron DeSantis, a prominent Republican figure and a prospective presidential candidate in the forthcoming 2024 election, had signed Senate Bill 1438 into law back in May. Although the legislation did not explicitly target drag shows, Hamburger Mary’s lawsuit argued that the sweeping nature of the law’s language left room for its interpretation to encompass this cherished art form.

Hamburger Mary’s lawsuit left no room for ambiguity, confidently asserting that their performances lacked any form of lewdness, explicit content, disorderly conduct, public exposure, or anything deemed inappropriate for young audiences.

Buoyed by the judge’s ruling, Hamburger Mary’s wasted no time in announcing the grand return of their beloved “family-friendly Broadway Brunch” this coming Sunday. Inviting attendees of all ages, those under 18 are warmly welcomed to attend alongside their parents or legal guardians, marking a joyous occasion and a reaffirmation of the restaurant’s commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all.
