The man who attempted to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022 has formally asked to be recognized as a woman, telling the court to use the name Sophie along with female pronouns. The defendant, previously identified as Nicholas Roske, admitted earlier this year to plotting the attack on Kavanaugh outside his Maryland home.

According to prosecutors, Roske traveled from California to the East Coast carrying a pistol, ammunition, and burglary tools, with the intent to kill the justice. Authorities say the plan was motivated by concerns over Supreme Court rulings on abortion rights and gun control. Roske was arrested near Kavanaugh’s residence after contacting police to confess her intentions before carrying out the act.

Court filings now reflect Roske’s request for recognition as female, an update that has drawn attention as sentencing approaches. The hearing is scheduled for early October, where Roske faces the possibility of a lengthy prison term.

The case, which underscored ongoing security risks for members of the nation’s highest court, continues to highlight the volatile climate surrounding judicial decisions and public reaction to them.
