In an emotional courtroom display, California resident Sherri Papini, notorious for orchestrating her own abduction, was seen in tears as she pleaded for a division of financial assets with her former spouse. During a hearing on October 23, Papini, 41, made a case for entitlement to part of an insurance settlement her estranged husband, Keith, received after the destructive Fawn Fire ravaged parts of Shasta County in October 2021.
Papini, who is in the midst of divorce proceedings and custody battles over their two children, maintained that despite her husband’s control over the couple’s finances, she had contributed to household expenses. This was before the 2016 incident where she deceived the community into believing she had been kidnapped, a ruse ABC News covered extensively.
Keith, 39, countered in legal filings that the insurance funds in question have been exhausted on necessary household expenditures, including a $500 monthly stipend for his mother, with whom he and the children resided for a time.
He further detailed, through court documents, significant credit card expenditures made by Sherri without the means for repayment. The list of expenses provided included a $571.72 Airbnb reservation, a $254.79 Walmart shopping spree, purchases amounting to $3,200 at Best Buy, and payments of $149.08 and $218.53 at Kohl’s, as reported by the Daily Mail. Transactions with Amazon, such as a Prime membership, were also part of the cited financial outlays.
During the court session on the aforementioned date, when questioned about these financial issues, Sherri invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly, a point highlighted in ABC’s coverage of the events.
The recent court appearance occurred shortly after Papini failed to attend a previous hearing, a no-show that was attributed to her attorney’s challenges in communicating with her, according to a KRCR news report.
Keith’s quest for sole custody of the children has also been met with silence from Papini’s legal representatives, he claims. As of now, he retains temporary custody amid ongoing divorce proceedings.
This family conflict has its origins in Keith’s divorce filing in April 2022, which came just days after Sherri’s guilty plea concerning the abduction hoax that prosecutors said she staged to reconnect with an ex-lover, James Reyes. According to prosecutors, planning for the hoax began around December 2015, involving preparations such as obtaining prepaid cellphones.
The fabricated narrative unraveled when DNA evidence on clothing led back to Reyes, culminating in Papini’s reappearance and subsequent arrest in March 2022, more than five years post-disappearance. After serving time in prison, Papini was released the previous month, a twist in a saga that has captured national attention.
