White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a sharp warning to Democrats on Thursday, saying that the ongoing government shutdown could carry “very real consequences” not only for federal operations but also for lawmakers who continue to block a funding resolution.
Speaking to reporters, Leavitt stressed that the administration has already prepared contingency plans that will allow essential services—such as defense, homeland security, and Social Security payments—to continue. However, she made clear that large portions of the federal workforce will face furloughs or work without pay if Congress fails to reach an agreement soon.
Leavitt specifically pinned the blame on Democratic leaders in the Senate, accusing them of putting politics above governance by rejecting a clean continuing resolution supported by the administration. She argued that Democrats are risking both service disruptions for millions of Americans and a political backlash from voters who will bear the brunt of delayed benefits, suspended programs, and economic uncertainty.
The press secretary also emphasized that the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has begun preparing to cut funding to programs deemed nonessential, some of which she suggested reflect Democratic policy priorities. This, she warned, could leave Democrats answering to their own constituencies for why these programs have been disrupted.
The standoff comes as pressure builds on both parties, with Republicans insisting on a straightforward funding extension and Democrats demanding broader budget measures tied to healthcare and social programs. With no compromise in sight, the impasse is threatening to stretch into weeks, putting workers, families, and agencies in limbo while raising the stakes for both sides ahead of a contentious election year.
