Ali Waggy and her fiancée, Jessica Robinson, were elated about their planned wedding at The Barn at Grace Hill in Kansas. However, their excitement turned to dismay after receiving an email from the venue’s owner that conflicted with their beliefs.
The couple was ready to make a deposit for their dream wedding at the venue, but an unexpected response from the owner brought their plans to a halt. The email stated that while the owner’s religious beliefs did not celebrate marriages other than those between a man and a woman, they were willing to serve everyone equally and would not prevent anyone from using the building.
This response, while not outright denying them the venue, prompted the couple to reconsider their choice on the grounds of inclusivity. Waggy, a preschool teacher, expressed her frustration, stating that the venue was willing to accept their money only because it was illegal to refuse them. She expressed her heartbreak on Facebook, where she had been discussing the wedding for several months before the venue revealed their religious stance.
Waggy shared her ordeal on social media, not seeking publicity but looking for alternative venue suggestions for their July 2025 wedding. Despite her initial distress, the overwhelming response with suggestions for new venues provided some solace.
She hopes that sharing her experience will help other LGBT couples avoid similar situations. Waggy’s post aimed to prevent others from undergoing the same heartache and disappointment. The couple and The Barn at Grace Hill have been reached for comment regarding the incident.
