Liberals Blast Ron DeSantis For ‘Disgustingly Racist’ Basketball Players Remarks

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis faced accusations of racism from some left-wing outlets and a national sports columnist for his recent remarks about basketball players. DeSantis’s defenders argued that the outcry was unwarranted and absurd.

During an interview where DeSantis discussed his love for baseball, he praised the game as “meritocratic” and inclusive, suggesting that people of different sizes and skill levels can excel in various positions. In contrast, he characterized basketball as a sport where exceptional athleticism is more prominent. He highlighted that in baseball, individuals with specific skills or pitches can compete at the highest level, even if they may not be the best athletes.

DeSantis’s comments went viral, leading liberal media outlets to perceive a racist undertone targeting the NBA and its predominantly Black players. USA Today columnist Mike Freeman accused DeSantis of promoting “racist tropes” and trying to appeal to his followers’ worst instincts. He inferred that DeSantis was implying that Black basketball players did not work hard.

The Root, a left-wing site, focused on DeSantis’s “freaks of nature” statement, deeming it a “disgustingly racist trope.” The writer emphasized that the GOP has been associated with white supremacy, implying that DeSantis’s remarks align with that narrative.

Conservatives, however, viewed the uproar as an overreach. They pointed out that NBA players are significantly taller on average than the average American man, while MLB players have a slightly shorter average height.

Bobby Burack of OutKick criticized Freeman’s take, stating that Freeman epitomizes the problem of a writer being deployed solely to amplify accusations of racism. Burack argued that DeSantis’s observation about athleticism in basketball versus baseball was accurate and that Freeman saw every story and comment through a racial lens.

In summary, DeSantis’s remarks about basketball players led to accusations of racism from some left-wing outlets and a sports columnist, while his defenders considered the outcry exaggerated and rooted in manufactured examples of racism.
