Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney criticized House Republicans, including Kevin McCarthy, for enabling extremism within the party. Cheney accused McCarthy of ignoring the attack on democracy by Donald Trump and his allies and promoting members with extremist views. While she refrained from naming the specific individuals, she suggested that some were white supremacists or antisemitic.
Cheney expressed her concern over the direction of the Republican Party and its failure to uphold conservative policies and the Constitution. She emphasized the need for a party that advocates for conservative values.
Cheney had previously welcomed McCarthy’s removal as speaker and opposed Rep. Jim Jordan’s bid for speakership. The House of Representatives has been paralyzed since McCarthy’s ouster, with Republicans struggling to elect a new speaker.
Cheney also criticized former President Donald Trump’s comments on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hezbollah. She called Trump unfit to be President of the United States.
Additionally, Cheney urged changes to the Biden administration’s Iran policy, enforcement of sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, and placing the Houthis back on the terrorist list. She denounced the rise of antisemitic and anti-Israel sentiment, especially on college campuses.
Cheney plans to release a book detailing what went wrong with the GOP and has not ruled out a presidential run in 2024.
