The Democratic mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, has begged the Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, to stop transporting illegal immigrants to the Windy City. Despite Lightfoot’s “strengthening” of Chicago’s position as a sanctuary city just two years ago, the city is still receiving blowback for this policy.
The outgoing mayor wrote to Governor Abbott on Sunday, appealing with him to require Texas to provide treatment for the daily influx of tens of thousands of illegal immigrants. The mayor claims that starting on Monday, the governor of Texas would send buses full of illegal aliens back to Chicago.
Since August 2022, when we began caring for migrants assigned by your delegation, more over 8,000 men, women, and children with no resources of their own have been in our care, she wrote. “That number only goes up from here.”
The fact that they came all the way from Texas to see Lightfoot shouldn’t come as a surprise to her. She insisted on inviting them to Chicago every time she saw them. Among her tweets from this year: “Yes, Chicago should be a safe city.
Now she says there are too many people in her city.
Because of our efforts in partnership with Cook County, the state of Illinois, and other local groups, Chicago has been designated as a Welcoming City. It’s gotten to the point where “our ability to receive individuals and families in a safe, orderly, and dignified manner has reached a critical tipping point,” she added, “due to your lack of consideration or coordination in an attempt to cause chaos and score political points.” Without additional organization and oversight, “we just don’t have enough shelters, space, or resources to take in more people at this rate.”
After five people, including an eight-year-old child, were shot dead in Texas on Friday night, police immediately began searching for a suspect, and the letter arrived just hours later. The current mass shooting is simply the most recent example of an issue that has plagued Texas and other border regions for years.
Just how does Lightfoot plan to put an end to this chaos? Thus, her answer is to increase fiscal outlay and implement “policy changes.” Like her fellow New York City Democratic Party members, she must be hoping for a pardon.
Obviously, this pandemonium will not cease until the border is locked and thousands of illegal immigrants are sent back home. Lightfoot probably won’t write Vice President Joe Biden appealing for these interventions, so you shouldn’t either. In spite of her long history of providing safe haven to illegal immigrants from all around the world, she now blames her Republican colleagues for being the callous ones.
