French President Emmanuel Macron faced severe criticism for attending an Elton John concert on Thursday night while violent protests engulfed Paris and the rest of the country.
Amidst the chaos, a video surfaced showing Macron enthusiastically dancing to Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting.” The optics of the situation drew condemnation from opposition minister Thierry Mariani of the National Rally Party, who called Macron’s attendance “totally irresponsible.” Mariani even quoted the book of Ecclesiastes, stating, “Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child,” highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Elton John’s husband, David Furnish, initially posted a photo of the two with Macron on Instagram, but due to the backlash, the post was subsequently deleted. Commenters criticized the post for its “wrong timing,” while others expressed their disappointment in Macron’s priorities during a time of crisis. One commenter directly addressed the tragic incident involving a child killed by police under Macron’s government, labeling his attendance at the concert a disgrace.
Remarkably, the concert took place on Thursday night while the protests had already been ongoing since Tuesday. As the country entered its fifth night of unrest on Saturday, an astonishing 45,000 police officers were deployed to combat the rioting.
The protests were triggered by an incident on Tuesday, where a police officer fatally shot Nahel M. during a traffic stop in Nanterre, near Paris. According to reports, the teenager had been driving in the bus lane during a traffic jam and was pulled over but refused to provide a license and attempted to flee. Fearing a potential car chase endangering others, the officer shot Nahel M. in the left arm and chest. It was later revealed that the teenager had a history of disregarding traffic stops.
As the protests intensified, disturbing footage emerged from Paris, showing a protester armed with what appeared to be a belt-fed machine gun. Witnesses captured harrowing scenes of buildings collapsing and being consumed by flames. Other videos showcased hundreds of protesters involved in looting and property destruction, and one particularly alarming clip depicted a bus driving through a wall of fire.
In the midst of the turmoil, hundreds of Muslims in France held a procession to honor the deceased Nahel M. President Macron, recognizing the gravity of the situation, canceled his planned trip to Germany, underscoring the severity of the country’s state.
The controversial decision of attending a concert amid such unrest highlighted the ongoing tensions in France and the significant challenges faced by the government in maintaining order and addressing the concerns of its citizens.
