New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani traveled to Washington, D.C. for an unannounced meeting with President Donald Trump to discuss potential federal support for a major housing initiative in New York.
The visit was not listed on either leader’s public schedule and took place privately at the White House.
During the meeting, Mamdani presented a proposal aimed at securing significant federal investment in housing development, with plans that could result in the construction of thousands of new units in the city.
As part of the presentation, the mayor’s team shared mock newspaper front pages highlighting what such a partnership could deliver, reflecting the scale of the proposed project.
The two also discussed additional matters affecting New York, including the detention of a Columbia University student by federal immigration authorities.
The meeting marked another direct engagement between the president and the Democratic mayor despite their past political differences, signaling continued dialogue on issues affecting the nation’s largest city.
