Mamdani Reaffirms Pledge to Arrest Netanyahu if He Enters NYC

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani reiterated his controversial promise to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he ever visit the city. Mamdani framed the move as a matter of aligning local action with international law, citing an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court.

During a televised interview, Mamdani was challenged on whether the NYPD would cooperate with such an arrest. He declined to say if Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch would approve, but affirmed that — as mayor — he would exhaust all existing legal mechanisms to enforce the warrant. Mamdani emphasized that he would not seek to legislate new authority to do so.

Critics have questioned the practicality of his promise, noting that the United States does not recognize ICC jurisdiction. Some legal experts argue that a city-level arrest of a foreign head of state would conflict with federal and diplomatic protocols.

Mamdani first made the pledge during a December 2024 interview, saying New York should “step up” and act in line with international justice principles. The renewed commitment comes as his campaign faces intense scrutiny over foreign policy positions and precinct-level credibility.
