The office of Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg sent a letter to the GOP in response to their claims that their investigation into Trump’s arrest was political.
The office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg called the requests for papers and witnesses in the case against former President Donald Trump “unlawful political interference” in the investigation.
In a statement sent to three of the most powerful House Republican lawmakers on Friday, General Counsel Leslie B. Dubeck criticized “baseless and inflammatory claims that our investigation is based on politics.” Trump is the first sitting president in U.S. history to be charged with a crime.
Dubeck says that “The Committees’ attempt to interfere with a state criminal investigation that is still going on and is now being prosecuted” is a new and illegal attack on New York’s national interests.
Bragg says that Trump may have paid Stormy Daniels money in secret in 2016 to stop her from talking about rumors that she had an affair with him while he was running for president. Trump and Daniels both say they haven’t been physical with each other, and they both agree that Trump lied on business documents to hide the money he gave to Daniels.
From this study, a grand jury in Manhattan has charged Trump with crimes, which has never happened before. Right now, we don’t know what the claims are because the case is under seal. Many Republican leaders have come out in support of Trump, saying that the Democratic prosecutor’s actions are based on politics and that the probe is a “witch hunt,” just like Trump has said.
Republicans in the House wrote to Bragg last week, saying they were worried that he might bring charges against the president. They also asked him to share the results of his investigation into Trump and to testify before Congress. The statement was signed by the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan, and the Republican chairs of the Administration and Oversight Committees. (R-OH).
In response, the office of District Attorney Bragg put out a statement that said, in part, “We won’t be scared away by attempts to hurt the justice system, and we won’t let false accusations stop us from applying the law fairly.”
Dubeck makes a strong case with his point. The paper says that Congress’s investigation into the Trump case is “an improper and dangerous usurpation of the executive and judicial functions” and that it has no right to do so.
Reports that Congress and President Trump worked together to attack the Special Counsel’s Office and the grand jury process have led to accusations that lawmakers are acting “more like a criminal defense attorney trying to gather evidence for a client than a legislative body trying to reach a legitimate legislative goal,” as stated in the letter.
Dubeck says that over the past 15 years, the DA’s office has given over $1 billion in collection money to the federal government but has kept only a “small fraction” of that amount. This is how the GOP is responding to claims that Bragg’s office is using public money to bother Trump.
The paper says that the district attorney spent close to $5,000 on Trump-related investigations and other costs. There was no help from the government or any other source to pay for these costs.
At the end of the letter, the Republican attempts to keep track of the DA’s investigation are harshly criticized.
Also, as you know, former President Trump has said harsh things about District Attorney Bragg, threatening on social media that his arrest or indictment in New York could cause “death and destruction.” Dubeck ended his letter by recommending that the committee chairmen use their position to denounce these attacks and call for respect for the fairness of our justice system and the work of the impartial grand jury.
She also said, “You and many of your colleagues have joined Mr. Trump in trying to hurt the reputations of elected state prosecutors and trial judges, and you have made false claims that the Office’s investigation, which is being done by an independent grand jury made up of regular New Yorkers, is politically motivated.”
We ask that you stop making such offensive comments and take back your request for information so that you don’t get in the way of the criminal justice system.
