Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, expressed his joy at the historic decision to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. Gaetz said that McCarthy had a paralyzing effect on the conservative agenda, citing McCarthy’s inadequate monitoring and misplaced spending priorities as examples. Gaetz was one of eight Republican members of the House who voted with the Democrats to oust McCarthy from his position as speaker. Rep. Patrick McHenry, who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, will take over as acting Speaker of the House until a permanent replacement is elected. Gaetz has voiced his support for probable contenders for the position of speaker of the House of Representatives, including Republican Representatives Tom Emmer, Mike Johnson, Jodey Arrington, Kevin Hern, and Steve Scalise. When McCarthy passed a short-term budget package to prevent a shutdown of the government and allow Congress more time to negotiate on spending bills, he infuriated conservatives who take a strict interpretation of their beliefs.
