He unveiled the Green Lights Grant Initiative, which he founded with his wife Camilla to help schools access federal grant money for safety and security measures.
Despite Congress passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) to allocate funds for mental health services and school security in response to the Uvalde shooting, McConaughey highlighted that the money had not reached the schools in the area. Out of 12 applications from the region, none had received the funding, leading to a frustrating 0% success rate.
To address the issue, McConaughey emphasized the importance of connecting school districts with the available billions of dollars designated for safety measures. He believed that streamlining the process would ultimately make schools safer for children.
In his analysis, McConaughey attributed the lack of progress on gun control to the way the debate was framed. By altering the word “control” to “responsibility,” he aimed to engage those who staunchly defend Second Amendment rights.
