Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles has declined to directly support former President Donald Trump’s demand that Decarlos Brown Jr.—the man accused of fatally stabbing Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska aboard a light-rail train—receive the death penalty.
Brown, 34, currently faces state charges for first-degree murder and a federal charge for causing death on a mass transportation system, which could allow for capital punishment.
Mayor Lyles has focused instead on transit security and criminal justice reforms. She announced increased security on the Lynx Blue Line, including added patrols and more security staff, but emphasized the need for bipartisan solutions and respect for due process.
Authorities continue their investigation as outrage grows over what many critics describe as failures in the legal system that allowed Brown to remain free despite a lengthy criminal record.
