Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., referred to China, Russia, and Iran as the new “axis of evil” during an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” This statement came in the midst of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Israel. McConnell also discussed U.S. financial support for its allies dealing with these dual conflicts.
McConnell agreed with Sen. Rand Paul, also a Republican from Kentucky, that the $1.5 trillion deficit is excessively large. However, he emphasized that the deficit increased during the previous administration under former President Donald Trump, rather than solely under the current Biden administration.
The senator stressed the urgency of addressing this “axis of evil” consisting of China, Russia, and Iran. He noted that these nations pose an immediate threat to the United States, and the world currently faces significant challenges, including global power competition, terrorism in the Middle East, and the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
McConnell argued that the Biden administration sent the wrong signals with its withdrawal from Afghanistan, which may have emboldened Russia’s actions in Ukraine. He also pointed out Iran’s involvement in providing support to groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. McConnell emphasized that these issues are interconnected, and they must be addressed comprehensively.
Regarding China’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, McConnell expressed concerns and stated that the situation should be viewed as a global problem.
In terms of the budget supplemental, McConnell indicated that Senate Republicans would seek credible border security measures. He explained that if the United States is taking financial responsibility for aiding its allies, it should also ensure its own security. McConnell acknowledged that the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel are interconnected and pose a serious threat to the United States.
McConnell mentioned that Asian allies, including Japan and South Korea, are closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine as it is relevant to their security concerns, particularly in relation to China. He highlighted the importance of providing assistance to Ukraine and noted that it contributes to job creation and the rebuilding of the U.S. industrial base.
When asked about China’s reaction to reports of diverted U.S. artillery shells and unfulfilled equipment requests, McConnell emphasized that providing assistance to Ukraine is beneficial for the United States as it contributes to rebuilding the nation’s industrial base and enhancing its capabilities to address more significant challenges posed by major powers, particularly in Asia.
