On Wednesday, Republican Senator from Kentucky Mitch McConnell declared his intention to “stay out” of the “very competitive” Republican presidential primary in 2024.
McConnell told reporters, “The way I’m going into this presidential primary season is to stay out of it.” “I’m not taking sides in that dispute. It looks like there will be a lot of competition for the nomination.
It’s common knowledge that McConnell wasn’t Trump’s greatest backer before he declared his candidacy for president on Tuesday night. At this time, there is no other primary challenger in the Republican Party.
At times throughout Trump’s administration, McConnell and Trump were at odds about who would control the Republican Party. Despite their cooperation in getting conservative justices appointed to the courts, Trump and McConnell’s relationship has deteriorated since Trump was defeated for reelection.
Since then, McConnell has maintained his position as leader of the Senate Republicans, giving him sway over a party that has been unable to stop President Joe Biden’s program.
McConnell’s fellow Republicans in the Senate have supported several pieces of Democrat-sponsored legislation, including the infrastructure package and the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act.” Experts have voiced concern that both pieces of legislation would increase prices.
On Tuesday, at his campaign kickoff, Trump argued against both bills and pledged to restore “national grandeur.”
Trump has pledged to “do everything it takes” to restore voter confidence in the electoral process. Election day voting, photo identification, and paper ballots are all necessities. And we demand that every ballot be counted on election day.
As he did over the previous four years, Trump said, “I would keep America out of foolish and needless foreign conflicts.” Trump has promised to restore all of the government employees that former Vice President Joe Biden had fired and to “eradicate the fetid rot of corruption.”
With Trump in office, “we will demolish the deep state,” he said.
