President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has requested that U.S. immigration authorities refrain from enforcing actions against supporters who are attending the Mexico vs. Dominican Republic match at SoFi Stadium. She emphasized the importance of soccer events being secure spaces and that no immigration operations should occur during the match. The consulates of Mexico in the United States are prepared to provide assistance to any detained citizens.
The appeal is being made in the context of the escalating tension in Los Angeles as a result of the large-scale ICE raids that targeted undocumented individuals. These raids sparked widespread protests, implemented curfews, and resulted in nearly 400 arrests, including those for more severe offenses such as assault and weapons use. Despite a post from Customs and Border Protection that has since been deleted, which suggested a forceful presence at sporting events, CBP subsequently clarified that the routine security procedures for large events remain unaltered.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is a proponent of peace and unity, and she urged that immigration enforcement not overshadow celebratory moments at sporting venues.
