A sheriff’s deputy from Miami-Dade County was shot during a confrontation in the northwest part of Miami on Wednesday afternoon, leading to a large-scale law enforcement response throughout multiple precincts.
The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. when the deputy approached a vehicle flagged for suspicious activity and engaged in an altercation with an occupant. The occupant allegedly opened fire, striking the deputy in the arm. He was transported to a nearby trauma center in stable condition.
A tactical response team was deployed to the area, along with K-9 units and helicopters conducting air surveillance. Authorities announced that two suspects were taken into custody at a nearby residence following a 30-minute standoff, and a third individual remains at large as the investigation continues.
Detectives collected multiple shell casings and a handgun at the scene and plan to obtain video from surrounding surveillance cameras. Sheriff Victor Rodriguez said the deputy “acted bravely under fire,” and deputies’ union officials praised the quick coordination of backup units.
Residents in the neighborhood were briefly advised to shelter in place until officers secured the perimeter. The state attorney’s office has opened a separate review into the shooting, and the suspect charged so far faces counts including attempted murder on a law-enforcement officer and illegal firearm possession.
