A 19-year-old engineering student at Grand Valley State University lost his life after being struck by a bullet that penetrated the floor during a house party in Tallmadge Township, Michigan. The tragic incident occurred on May 9, when a shot fired from an upstairs bedroom traveled through the floor and hit the student, Connor Lotterman, in the head while he was in the room below.
Lotterman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but passed away the next day, just days before his 20th birthday. Authorities said the gunman, a 20-year-old man known to others at the gathering, fired multiple rounds from the upper level of the home. Investigators believe the act was intentional, based on the number of shots fired, although the death was ruled an accident.
Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the incident. Law enforcement is working closely with the Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to evaluate possible charges against the shooter, whose name has not been released.
Lotterman’s family and university community are mourning the loss, remembering him for his strong character and promising future. The investigation remains active as officials continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting.
