An autopsy has found that Stefanie Smith, a 41-year-old mother from Indiana, unfortunately died on a flight returning from a vacation in the Dominican Republic as a result of a medical problem. A forensic pathologist informed Smith’s family that she had a carotid artery dissection in her neck, which can significantly reduce blood supply to the brain and possibly result in a stroke.
Smith’s brother Chris Volz called the incident a tragic medical event. Her family and the public had previously been confused by the news of her unexpected death, particularly considering her seeming good health and busy lifestyle throughout her vacation. Smith, her boyfriend, and another couple had enjoyed five fun nights at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro in Punta Cana. She enjoyed the resort’s amenities, which included poolside mojitos and a steak supper on her last night, as well as daily morning jogs.
Smith’s trip partner, Maria Yannotti, complimented the resort on its cleanliness, security, and food quality, adding that none of their party had any health issues while there. She cherished her memories of Smith as a happy, vivacious person who could light up everyone in her vicinity.
Smith was declared dead at a nearby hospital following the plane’s emergency landing in Turks & Caicos due to her abrupt seizures. Her two teenage children, a 16-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son, survive her. Her loving legacy and contagious spirit are treasured by her friends, family, and community.
An initiative to raise money for her children was started in her honor, and it has received a lot of support, raising almost $94,000. The impact Smith had on her community and the deep loss felt by those who knew her are highlighted by this support.
