A man suspected of fatally shooting a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy triggered a dramatic motorcycle pursuit on the 210 Freeway in eastern Los Angeles Monday afternoon, reaching speeds of up to 170 mph before crashing in a violent termination of the chase.
The incident began after deputies responded to a domestic-violence call in Rancho Cucamonga around midday. Upon arrival, the suspect allegedly opened fire and fatally wounded Deputy Andrew Nunez with a head wound. Moments later, the man mounted a motorcycle and fled eastbound, weaving through traffic at extreme speed.
Aerial footage captured the chase, showing the rider blindly swerving around vehicles and appearing to lose control after lifting his hands to adjust a backpack. He then collided with a sedan driven by an off-duty narcotics officer who had intervened. The impact launched the suspect into the air, while his motorcycle rolled over him before he was subdued by arriving officers.
Deputy Nunez, a six-year veteran of the department and expectant father, was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The suspect, hospitalized in stable condition, is now facing charges including murder of a peace officer. The investigation remains ongoing.
