MSNBC Contributor Blasts DeSantis’ ‘Scumbag’ Remark on Jacksonville Shooter

During a recent segment on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” commentator Trymaine Lee expressed concern about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ choice of words when addressing the recent tragic shooting at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville. The shooting resulted in the deaths of three African American individuals. DeSantis had referred to the perpetrator as a “scumbag,” which Lee found problematic.

Lee highlighted his discomfort with DeSantis’ language, asserting that it places the blame solely on the individual responsible for the atrocity. According to Lee, this approach ignores the broader issue of systemic White supremacy and the violence it perpetuates across the country.

The commentator argued that labeling the shooter as a “scumbag” or attributing the incident to mental health concerns avoids confronting the larger context of online co-conspirators who promote harmful ideologies and lawmakers who introduce divisive legislation. Lee stressed the importance of acknowledging these contributing factors and addressing the underlying forces that contribute to such acts of violence.

Lee’s point was that designating the incident as the work of a single individual can prevent a comprehensive understanding of the true problem at hand – the deep-seated issue of White supremacy and its widespread impact. By focusing solely on the individual, the opportunity to address the broader societal factors that fuel such violence may be missed.

In essence, Lee’s critique suggests that holding one person accountable oversimplifies the complex and systemic nature of the issue, preventing a meaningful examination of the underlying causes and necessary solutions.
