During a recent panel discussion on MSNBC, host Ari Melber expressed shock when Gordon Sondland, the former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union and key witness in Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial, revealed he has regained support for the former president. Sondland, who had previously distanced himself from Trump after the events of January 6, 2021, explained that his perspective changed after four years of experiencing the Biden administration’s policies.
Sondland pointed to the Biden-Harris administration’s actions as an “existential threat” to the U.S. and its allies, citing economic struggles and his own experiences living in Portland, Oregon, as factors contributing to his renewed support for Trump. Despite Melber’s disbelief, Sondland stood firm, arguing that the current administration’s policies have caused significant damage, particularly to businesses.
Melber, clearly taken aback, pressed Sondland on his reversal of stance. He suggested that January 6th should have been a defining moment, greater than any policy issue. However, Sondland countered, claiming that current threats to democracy under the Biden administration surpass the concerns raised by the Capitol riot.
Sondland’s comments were part of a broader conversation with other former Trump officials, sparking significant attention as he publicly shifted back toward supporting Trump ahead of the 2024 election.
