Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has publicly criticized Speaker Mike Johnson following the passage of a Ukraine aid package in the House of Representatives, which included significant funding to support Ukraine’s defense against Russia. The bill’s passage, which Greene attempted to thwart, led to her escalating her calls for Johnson’s resignation.
During an appearance on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Greene expressed her discontent with Johnson’s leadership, accusing him of betraying the Republican party’s values and agenda on multiple fronts including Ukraine, border security, and government spending. Greene’s critique comes after a failed attempt to push through a motion to vacate the speaker’s position in March, which did not lead to a mandatory vote.
Greene, alongside a few other representatives like Thomas Massie and Paul Gosar, has been vocal about her opposition, suggesting that Johnson’s decision to advance the Ukraine aid package aligns more with Democratic priorities than those of his party. This stance has caused a division within the party, with a noticeable split in the vote—101 Republicans supporting the aid, against 112 opposing it.
Despite the internal conflict and calls for his resignation, Johnson has remained firm, rejecting any suggestion that he should step down. He defends his actions by emphasizing the importance of America’s role on the global stage and the necessity of the aid package for Ukraine, arguing that the decision was about doing the right thing regardless of the political fallout.
As tensions simmer within the Republican ranks, Greene has hinted at a persistent readiness to pursue further actions to challenge Johnson’s leadership, although she has not specified any immediate plans to do so. This internal party strife underscores a broader discontent with the current political dynamics, as Greene articulates a sentiment that the Republican leadership is not adequately reflecting the will of its voters.
