Along with the killing of businessman Bob Lee, there have been other violent acts in San Francisco recently, such as the killing of champion rider Ethan Boyes and the attack on former fire commissioner Don Carmignani.
Lee was stabbed to death Tuesday morning in downtown San Francisco. He made the digital payments service CashApp and was the chief product officer of the business MobileCoin, which deals with cryptocurrencies. The wealthy businessman’s death brought crime and homelessness in the Bay Area back into the spotlight.
Michelle Tandler, CEO of Growth Path Labs and Thumbtack and a loud critic of San Francisco’s top leaders, brought up the deaths of Boyes and Carmignani on social media.
Boyes was riding his bike along Arguello Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon when he was hit by a car that crossed the center line. The cops haven’t said if the driver was taken to jail or tested for drink or drugs, but it doesn’t look like his injuries are life-threatening.
Boyes was the 2018 and 2019 USA Cycling Masters Track national winner and held the national record for the 500-meter flying start in the track time trial.
Shaana Rahman, a family spokesman, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Ethan was “a very experienced cyclist who was well liked in the cycling community.” The family and the people who ride bikes in San Francisco have lost a lot.
On Wednesday night, a group of homeless people beat up Carmignani in front of his mother’s house on Laguna and Chestnut Street. He got a cracked head and other major injuries. Carmignani also had a cut on his face from a knife.
After the event had already happened, 24-year-old Garret Doty was caught and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and violence that caused serious hurt.
“Our hearts go out to him and his family,” San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott told CBS Bay Area. The outlook for him getting better from his wounds is good. But it’s exactly these kinds of rude and obvious actions that make people nervous.
Even though important people, like San Francisco’s Democratic Mayor London Breed, have asked for police action to be cut back, the number of arrests in the city has dropped dramatically over the past three years. When news of Lee’s death got out, a number of well-known people spoke out against it to San Francisco’s officials. Among them were Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and Jake Shields, who used to be the UFC champion.
I’ve never seen anything like San Francisco’s current anarchy. I see people using drugs near trash cans all over the city. In the city, fast cars are driven without care. I’ve heard that car stops aren’t encouraged anymore,” Tandler wrote on social media. In some places, crooks will steal anything that’s out in the open. I have to watch where I step almost everywhere I go to escape broken glass and other trash. Not a lot of places are like this.
