Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has initiated a comprehensive audit of the Department of Defense (DoD), aiming to identify and eliminate wasteful expenditures. This move has reportedly caused significant concern within the Pentagon.
Steve Simoni, CEO of Allen Control Systems and a former Navy nuclear engineer, highlighted instances of excessive spending during his tenure at the DoD, such as purchasing ruggedized HDMI cables for $10,000 each, which are available for $20 to $30 in retail stores. He emphasized the necessity for more efficient use of resources, especially in light of emerging threats like the proliferation of drones on the battlefield.
Simoni suggested that funds recovered from eliminating waste could be redirected towards modernizing military technology, particularly in developing counter-drone capabilities. He noted that China currently manufactures approximately 90% of drones, transforming them from consumer gadgets into advanced weapons of war.
The DOGE audit is expected to uncover various areas of unnecessary spending within the DoD, prompting a reevaluation of budget allocations to enhance the U.S. military’s technological edge and operational efficiency.
