Nancy Pelosi is not one to waste time. She turned down the president’s offer before he even offered it.
I have heard no one mention a line in President Trump’s speech that should give Democrats fair warning. He promised the wall will be built one way or another. That tells me he will declare a humanitarian crisis at the border and use that as a justification to build the wall without Congress. Should that happen, the Democrats will walk away empty handed.
They will have to explain to the Dreamers, the TPS guests and a multitude of pro-immigration groups why they got nothing in return.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi preemptively shot down a proposal by President Donald Trump to reopen the federal government.
President Donald Trump proposed Saturday to offer Democrats, as a trade-off for $5.7 billion of funding for the border wall, DACA protections for Dreamers as well as extend legal status for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. “Democrats were hopeful that the President was finally willing to reopen government and proceed with a much-need discussion to protect the border,” Pelosi said in a statement prior to the president’s announcement.
She continued, “Unfortunately, initial reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives. It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter. For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports.”
But, here is the problem for Dreamers and TPS (Temporary Protection Status) immigrants.
The Supreme Court has heard the case against DACA and since it has the same provisions that DAPA had, it will be ruled unconstitutional and they would all be eligible for deportation. The TPS for 300,000 migrants has expired and without protections, they will also be eligible for deportation. That could amount to 1 million deportations.
That’s a darn good start.
