In Largo, Maryland, President Biden gave his first address to an audience since his son Hunter was charged with federal gun offenses. Denoting “MAGAnomics,” a play on the slogan “Make America Great Again” used by the late President Donald Trump, he presented his economic program and criticized the Republican economic approach.
Apart from denouncing the extreme economic agenda of the Republican Party, Biden said that this current party is distinct from earlier ones. Republicans, according to him, were promoting “trickle-down” economics and threatening to default on debt. He said that their plan will result in significant tax relief for the richest 1% of households, those making over $4 million yearly.
All throughout his speech, President Biden highlighted the post-pandemic job recovery, pointing to record-low jobless statistics for veterans, African Americans, Hispanics, and those without a high school diploma.
Interestingly, there was no mention of Hunter Biden’s legal situation throughout the address. After it was claimed that Hunter Biden had lied about taking drugs when he purchased a firearm in 2018, he was charged with federal weapons offenses. An indictment was brought after a plea deal that would have avoided a criminal trial broke down. According to his legal counsel, Hunter Biden was given immunity as part of the arrangement and was not in breach of the law.
Hunter Biden’s business dealings in China and the Ukraine are being looked at in addition to the gun accusations, and tax charges may be filed down the road. A formal inquiry into President Biden’s impeachment was also announced by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, who sought to link the elder Biden to his son’s business endeavors.
