NASA has issued an emergency alert regarding asteroid 2024 YR4, which has an estimated 1-in-43 chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032. Discovered in December 2024, this near-Earth object measures approximately 180 feet in diameter, comparable to the size of London’s Big Ben or the Statue of Liberty. An impact from an asteroid of this magnitude could release energy equivalent to 15 megatons of TNT, potentially causing widespread devastation in a metropolitan area.

To refine the asteroid’s trajectory and assess the potential threat, NASA is utilizing the James Webb Space Telescope’s advanced infrared capabilities. Observations are scheduled for March and May 2025, aiming to provide more precise measurements of 2024 YR4’s size and orbit. These data will inform potential mitigation strategies, which may include deflection techniques such as kinetic impactors or nuclear devices, depending on the assessed risk.

The international community, including agencies like the European Space Agency, is closely monitoring the situation. While the probability of impact remains relatively low, the potential consequences necessitate thorough observation and preparedness. NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office continues to collaborate with global partners to develop and refine strategies to protect Earth from such threats.

This situation underscores the importance of early detection and international cooperation in planetary defense efforts. As new data become available, authorities will provide updates and, if necessary, implement measures to safeguard populations potentially at risk.
