In a dramatic evening confrontation in Southeast Washington, D.C., members of the National Guard assisting the Metropolitan Police Department intervened when a man brandished a foot-long kitchen knife during a violent street fight.
The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday as a pair of victims left a local restaurant near the Navy Yard Metro Station. According to court documents, the group noticed a man and woman following them. An altercation followed, during which the suspect swung the large knife, inflicting a serious cut to the victim’s palm. The wounded individual was transported to Howard University Hospital for treatment.
Multiple bystanders reported seeing the knife and alerted authorities. A Metro Police patrol and nearby Guard troops responded swiftly, disarming the suspect and bringing the melee to a halt. Two individuals have been arrested: the woman is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and the man has been charged with simple assault.
The presence of National Guard personnel—deployed under federal support orders—was central to the swift resolution. Officials say the operation underscores the Guard’s expanding role in urban security efforts during heightened crime activity in the District of Columbia.
As the investigation proceeds, police are reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements, and have asked the public to come forward with tips. Meanwhile, the city is assessing the broader implications of military-police cooperation amid rising concerns about violent street-level offenses.
