NBA Coach Slams Trump’s Harvard Funding Freeze, Wears Shirt in Solidarity

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr made headlines this week by wearing a Harvard basketball shirt during a press conference, a symbolic move in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze billions in federal funding to the Ivy League institution.

The administration’s freeze, which targets Harvard’s refusal to comply with federal oversight demands, has sparked backlash from academic leaders and public figures alike. Kerr, never shy about voicing his opinions on political matters, took the opportunity to express solidarity with the university.

“I believe in academic freedom,” Kerr said, emphasizing his support for institutions managing their affairs independently of government intervention. He called the funding freeze “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard” and urged others to “stand up to a bully.”

Kerr’s statement is the latest in a growing wave of criticism directed at the funding freeze, which critics argue undermines the principle of institutional autonomy in higher education. His action adds a prominent voice from the world of sports to a national conversation that continues to intensify.
