A late-night street takeover in Secaucus, New Jersey, spiraled into violence over Labor Day weekend as crowds of vehicles and onlookers clashed with responding police officers. Authorities say more than 100 cars flooded the intersection of Secaucus Road and County Avenue around 2 a.m., where drivers blocked traffic and performed stunts while large groups gathered to watch.
When officers arrived, they were immediately surrounded by dozens of people. Some members of the crowd climbed onto police cruisers, while others hurled fireworks at the vehicles, with several devices exploding beneath patrol cars and putting officers at serious risk. Despite the chaos, no injuries were reported.
Law enforcement from surrounding jurisdictions quickly joined Secaucus police to regain control of the scene. Officers dispersed the crowd, but many participants fled before arrests could be made.
Police Chief Dennis Miller condemned the takeover, calling it “riotous behavior” that endangered officers and the public. In response, the department has created a multi-unit task force involving traffic, patrol, detective, and intelligence officers to identify suspects. Officials confirmed that video evidence is being reviewed, and they are urging residents to come forward with information to help hold those responsible accountable.
