California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing intense criticism over remarks made on August 20 during an appearance on a talk show, in which he urged Democrats to “fight” Republicans and said, “we’re gonna punch these sons of bitches in the mouth.” Critics say the timing of those comments is especially troubling now, in light of recent political violence.
Following the resurfacing of the remarks, Newsom denounced the assassination of Charlie Kirk as “disgusting, vile and reprehensible,” and called for an end to political violence. He emphasized that in a democracy, debate should be driven by ideas, not aggression.
Newsom also remarked that Kirk was committed to open political conversation and encouraged people to honor his memory by engaging across political divides in a respectful manner.
